Important Considerations for Students taking Online Classes

The decision to take a class online as opposed to a class on campus should be carefully considered before enrolling. It is true that online courses allow you to log on to the computer at your convenience. It doesn't matter if it's at 2 p.m. in the computing lab, Sunday afternoon at your local library, or even 1 a.m. at home. The class will be there when you want to access it. Of course, that's an advantage to those with families, full time jobs, transportation problems, or special needs. However appealing online courses appear to be, please consider the following:

  • Online course require you to be very self-motivated and self-disciplined. You must be prepared to log on regularly (3-5 times per week) in order to keep up with the material in the course. You must also plan to spend 8 or more hours per week reading, preparing, participating in discussions, taking quizzes, and submitting assignments.
  • Most students who have taken online courses will tell you that  they are more labor intensive than courses delivered on campus. It just takes more time. In an online course everyone in the class contributes equally to classroom discussions and group work. No hiding at the back of the classroom!
  • Technology is is not always reliable. The plan to submit homework at the last minute can de defeated by problems with your local computer, a busy or down server. This can be frustrating.
  • You will need to have simple computer skills. You should know how to cut and paste, email and send attachments, use a browser, and how to download from the Web.
